Miyazaki has announced his next film: Ponyo on a Cliff!!!!!!!!!!!
It's going to be drawn in watercolor and pastels, so the whole film will look like a moving painting!
The story will center around "a 5 year old boy Sosuke and the princess goldfish Ponyo who wants to become human which of course will promise much good! An extra interesting thing is that Goro Miyazaki (Hayao's son) when he was 5 years old has been chosen as the model for the main character Sosuke."
I think I also remember reading somewhere that Sosuke falls in love with Ponyo . . . .
Apparently, two major themes of the film will be "getting back to the sea" and the bond between parent and child. The first one, I expect, means finding the place where you belong. The second reflects Miyazaki's choice to use his son as a model, and is particularly touching since the two were rumored to have been quarrelling during the production of Gedo Senki (Tales from Earthsea). It seems like this film is Miyazaki reaching out to his son and trying to patch things up! :3
*Last year there were rumors that his next film would be based on a Chinese story called "I Lost My Little Boy" (I think I posted about it a long time ago), but whether or not these were simply rumors or if Miyazaki has just put this project on hold to work on Ponyo is yet to be seen . . .
